Two Sets of NY 21 Club Gold Gilt Decanter Tags
One of my ALL TIME favorite finds!! A rare 6-piece gilded bronze port decanter set from NY’s 21 Club, found in their original boxes. The 21 Club stored the private wine collections of JFK, Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis Jr, Elizabeth Taylor, Ernest Hemingway & Marilyn Monroe to name a few. The first version of the 21 Club opened in Greenwich Village in 1922 as a small speakeasy known as the Red Head. In 1929, it was moved to make way for the construction of Rockefeller Center. Although raided by police on many occasions during Prohibition, the staff had methods to protect the club from the authorities. As soon as a raid began, a system of levers was used to tip the shelves of the bar, sweeping the liquor bottles through a chute and into the city's sewers! The bar also included a secret wine cellar, which was accessed through a hidden door in a brick wall which opened into the basement of the building next door. It was used as a wine cellar until it officially closed in Dec of 2020.
